(Todavía no la he invitado.)
And I’ve had to ask myself: so what is this really about? What is the focus? And: why am I doing this? I realize that a lot of what I want to do is discuss the context and content of your writing in relation to how you are positioned within different people’s notions of literature. And I think I also really wanted an excuse to focus on YOUR WRITING and YOU. All of your writing. How gorgeous and powerful and wonderful and wise it is. How it did not fit neatly into the boxes that are currently in vogue. I honestly have not been satisfied with any of the current literary theories – they all felt like boxes that did not hold you right. I felt that many of the theories are limiting. For example, anytime someone talks about “resistance” I feel that it is limiting because even though resistance is important and powerful, I see in your work much more than mere resistance that depends on the thing it’s resisting in order to exist. Other labels such as post modern or post structuralism are even worse, even as they are also useful.
Anyway, I do want to propose a focus! And that is: to go draw on different ideas of space. This has partly come out of the dissertation process and partly out of your own work and writings. My dissertation Co Chairs think the focus is how Dominican women writers – how you all - create a space for yourselves and your writing. “How is that taking place?” is how one of them put it. I would like to explore a few other things: what you were writing about and how, and what the context was, and how you were received. But that word: Space – Espacio - has come up a lot in many ways as I look at your writings.
So why not space? Incluso, estoy pensando llamar esta tesis “En este espacio: Dominican women writers in the USA and the spaces of contemporary literature.”
y no estamos solas
nos acompaña Ondina
para limpiar nuestra memoria
Las palabras serán precisas
como hemos deseado
No estamos solas
no
está Yemayá
Ochún
para hacernos beber su historia
Están los niños
creciendo con la dicha
Están los hombres
dándose la vuelta y apoyándonos
Están las ancianas recordando
con sus bocas desdentadas
y sus risas como ángeles
Están buscando sueños
En este espacio
que es de ellas
De nosotras para siempre
I hope that’s not too vague. The themes of space actually has already come up in the interviews and the work I have done with some of you and it figures into some of the contexts I’ve been looking at – for example looking at the Feria del Libro Dominicano and the LIBER book fair in Spain as spaces for your work as writers and for reader to reach you (or not – I noted that some of your works were not found at the book fairs.) Space is also a theme in your writing – the spaces that your character move in, the spaces evoked in your poetry, the spaces created in performance etc.
Even the blog as a possible space can be incorporated. I could go on and on with this but I don’t want to overdo it especially since the intention is to leave it open to whatever themes you want to come up with. In fact, Marianela had proposed a question a year ago that was on a completely different theme – and that’s ok! See:
